Summary of tubenoses and selected other seabirds seen on Zegrahm trip on MV Clipper Odyssey from Hawaii to Tahiti via Kiribati Aug 27th to Sept 10th, 2008. A personal summary by P. Fraser.

This list gives a complete list of all tubenoses seen as well as other seabirds; whether identified for sure, unsure, or “not a clue”!

Note that there was no Sept 1st, but Sept 8th happened twice!

Tahiti Petrel  (33) 1 between Hawaii and Kiribati on Aug 30th. 2 north of Kiribati on Aug 31st. 1 between Kiritimati and Malden on Sept 4th. 1 south of Malden Island on Sept 5th late. 2 between Starbuck and Flint on Sept 7th. 2 north of Flint on Sept 8th. 12 southeast of Flint on Sept 8th, pm. 6 between Flint and Bora Bora on Sept 8th. 6 between Taha'a and Moorea on Sept 10th.

Phoenix Petrel (15) 1 between Hawaii and Kiribati on Aug 30th, flew next to ship. 2 north of Kiribati on Aug 31st. 1 near Kiritimati on Sept 3rd. 10 on Motu Cook, Kiritimati, on Sept 3rd. 1 southeast of Flint on Sept 8th pm.

Tahiti or Phoenix Petrel (12) 6 north of Kiribati on Aug 31st. 3 between Kiritimati and Malden on Sept 4th. 1 north of Flint on Sept 8th. 2 between Flint and Bora Bora on Sept 8th. ID Note: Immediately south of the equator we consistently encountered abnormally strong trade winds; in higher winds I did not consider identification between these two as straightforward as I had expected, the plumage features of Phoenix Petrel are not easy to see except at close range, and Tahiti Petrel loses the languid flying pattern shown in slacker winds, most (all?) Tahitis showed pale rumps

Black-winged Petrel (16) 8 between Hawaii and Kiribati on Aug 30th. 5 north of Kiribati on Aug 31st. 3 between Starbuck and Flint on Sept 7th.

Cook's Petrel (1) 1 between Starbuck and Flint on Sept 7th seen at 06.50 seemd most likely this species as it had a pale head and pale underwings.

Collared Petrel (1) 1 pale morph individual between Kiritimati and Malden on Sept 4th 12.00 - 18.00. ID Note: this bird showed extensive broad underwing markings, and seemed entirely reminiscent of Collared Petrels seen in the South-west Pacific.

Cookilaria Petrels  (14) 1 between Kiritimati and Malden on Sept 4th distant but had dark head and pale underwing. 4 between Kiritimati and Malden on Sept 4th. 2, Starbuck on Sept 6th. 2 between Starbuck and Flint on Sept 7th. 2 southeast of Flint on Sept 8th pm. 3 between Flint and Bora Bora on Sept 8th. ID Note: most of these (apart from the Sept 4th bird) were probably Black-winged Petrels.

Herald Petrel (1) 1 pale morph between Flint and Bora Bora on Sept 8th.

Kermadec Petrel (2) 1 between Starbuck and Flint on Sept 7th. 1 north of Flint on Sept 8th. Both pale morphs.

Juan Fernandez Petrel (84) 1 south of Hawaii on Aug 28th. 66 between Hawaii and Kiribati on Aug 30th. 16 north of Kiribati on Aug 31st. 1 between Starbuck and Flint on Sept 7th. ID Note: subsequent review of video revealed two individuals with white napes. Nevertheless, I considered them to be this species rather than White-necked Petrel as they both had similar underwing markings to the other ‘grey-naped’ birds.  Video of White-necked Petrels taken in the south-west Pacific confirms a contiguous dark mark along the leading underside of the primaries reaching the carpal patch.

One other Pterodroma was seen as follows:

Unknown (by me) Petrel? (1) 1 between Hawaii and Kiribati on Aug 30th at circa 11;50 North. This bird was video’d, and appeared to me at the time to show the head and underwing pattern of Gould’s Petrel, but perhaps without quite extensive enough dark on the head sides; however Onley and Schofield depict a worn Stejneger’s Petrel showing more extensively marked underwings which look very similar to Gould’s Petrel, but this bird didn’t show a pronounced collar mark. I also considered that the bird may have been a dark-headed Black-winged Petrel, and then became really confused when I found the possibility of Hawaiian Petrel could not be eliminated for sure, when I read Don Roberson’s article on Dark-rumped Petrel identification ; here in the set of 4 photos, the top left bird looks identical to this bird. Although I had hoped to encounter Hawaiian Petrel on this trip, I returned home disappointed, as, having seen many Galapagos Petrels on a trip a few years ago, I knew that I had seen nothing resembling these birds on this trip. Are Hawaiian Petrels really that “dinky” compared with Galapagos Petrels? Anyway if you can wait a couple of minutes for it to load…. See video here
